January 5, 2007, Newsletter Issue #92: Emulate, but donīt imitate

Tip of the Week

Itīs fine to be influenced by the style of writers you admire. But be careful that you are not simply imitating what they do. You must write in your own voice, with your own diction, and about the things that matter to you. Simply changing the title and "modernizing" a Chekov story is not authentic writing. The story and the way of telling must be your own.
