June 27, 2003, Newsletter Issue #20: Drawing on Basic Emotional Experiences

Tip of the Week

A story can, on one level, be "about" something in the abstract emotional sense. Often this will come from the writer`s own experience. Shame, fear, regret, disappointment, loneliness, the sense of having failed...These are the emotional elements that cause us to act in life. Try generating story ideas by listing some of the more profound emotional events from your own experience.

Examples:
*My most shameful act
*My most painful betrayal
*My most profound regret about someone no longer living.
