Tip of the Week
Build your story around whatever is eating at your character. Relationship failing? House burned down? Get to the point as quickly as you can--in the first line if possible. The faster you engage your reader in the heart of your story, the more likely they´ll be to finish it. Don`t leave your reader wondering what the story is!
As an exercise, try writing some first lines, in which you introduce the central conflict of your story quickly & concisely. Of course, every story doesn`t have to start this way, but it will get you in the habit of putting things on the table quickly. Use your imagination--even get wacky!
