December 19, 2003, Newsletter Issue #45: Novels--Should I use an outline?

Tip of the Week

Before you begin writing, chart the novel`s main story arc in a general outline. If it helps, write a one-page "synopsis" in which you plan out what will happen and who will figure into the story. You don`t have to marry yourself to your original plan--in fact, a lot will change as your characters develop. But hammering out the basic plot and story will give you real direction, and it will save you a draft in the long run.
