July 18, 2003, Newsletter Issue #23: Watch Your Language

Tip of the Week

How is your language? Is it fresh and snappy? Do you make good use of sensory material? Scan your piece for piece repeatedly for examples of:

*Vague, unclear, or unhelpful wording
*Inappropriately abstract phrases?
*Phrases which convey unearned emotion or lack freshness (Ex., "Something broke inside me," "one thing led to another," "once upon a time," etc.)
*Sentimental, or "sappy" language.
