September 19, 2003, Newsletter Issue #32: Minding the Details

Tip of the Week

Good writing, whatever the form or genre, depends on its use of concrete details and images. Your prose/poetic texture should be a weaving of minute detail that puts the reader in the EXACT moment you have in your own mind. These details will set your moment apart from others that might occur in fiction. For example, when speaking of love, offer details and images from the senses that indicate why your take on the subject is unique. Tell how you adore your loverīs blue hair, or the way the birthmark on her hand resembles a unicorn. Anything to create a real, wholly original scene that grabs the reader.
